Bone and Cartilage Grafts as well as Implantation Materials.

Bone and Cartilage Grafts.
Autografts ( grafts transferred from one place to another on the same animal ) of bone are commonly used to replace portions of the facial bones, long bones of the extremities, or other bones. This bone comes from the ribs, ilium, or ulna.
autografts of cartilage can be taken from the nasal septum and cartilaginous portion of the ribs. Carved cartilage is most commonly used for the framework of a reconstructed ear, which is then covered by a local skin flap. Preserved dead allografts ( grafts from genetically disparate individuals of the same species ) of bone and cartilage are occasionally used to augment the facial bones.

Implantation Materials.
Very few foreign materials can successfully be incorporated in the human body. The body's protective mechanism against infection will respond with a foreign body reaction to most materials. In plastic surgery, medical grade silicone is used commonly for implantation. Silicone gel in a preformed silicone envelope is the most common type of brest implant. Solid silicone has been used for the framework of a reconstructed nose, ear, orbital floor, facial bone, skull, and finger joint.
